Specializing in Emotional Sobriety For Long-Term Addiction Sobriety
Whether newly sober or years of sobriety staying sober is not just about not using drugs and alcohol. It’s about not using substances when you feel. Drugs and alcohol are mood altering substances and we use them because we want to change how we feel. The Big Book explains ‘precisely how we recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body’. When recovered we have learned to consistently and instinctually respond to people, places, and situations in an emotionally balanced way – without using drugs and alcohol. However many recovering people are in emotional kindergarten. We grew up never feeling safe enough to talk, trust, or feel. We learned to repress our feelings when responding to life and used substances to alleviate the anxiety from our unexpressed feelings. To become recovered we have to heal our fears of talking, trusting, and feeling to achieve emotional sobriety which supports the process for long-term addiction sobriety.
